Broken umbrella re-introduced as stunning canopy

The stormy rainy season leaves countless umbrellas in a dilapidated condition each year, increasing the load on the landfills by a few more tons. Diverting a decent amount of waste from the landfills and encouraging people to take up recycling is a creative installation at a park in New York. Dubbed the “Penumbra”, the large canopy by Jean Shin made from broken umbrellas that were collected from the street and deconstructed, reassembled and re-introduced to form an enticing piece of art. Exhibiting primarily black umbrellas, the creation attached to trees provide a shade to the visitors, while creating wonderful shadows below.
