Shop Architect’s environmentally sustainable, functional and cost effective design for Botswana Innovation Club has won the International Design Competition. The proposed layout will provide office and laboratory space for technology driven and knowledge intensive foreign and local business at Gabarone using cutting edge green technologies. Metamorphosing well with the surroundings the Shop’s outline for the project envisages an energy blanket comprising various active and passive energy generating systems. Setting a tone for the future building designs, the plan’s roof incorporates large overhangs to passively shade the building’s interior volumes while at the same time use photovoltaic systems to harness solar energy. The blueprint includes a low maintenance roof garden to collect, filter and re-use rain water. Shop’s claims that, a combination of these can effectively offset at least half of the building’s operational energy costs.
