In an effort to help the needy and raise awareness regarding environmental care, a Bolivian lawyer turned architect Ingrid Vaca Diez has got into the construction of houses with bottles for low-income families. Her eco-venture involves reusing the available waste material like PET bottles, expired powder milk, horse manure, linseed oil etc. This transformation from a layer to a full time architect started with a small neighbor girl’s request of constructing a room and the increasing amount of plastic bottles in her patio. And finally she stared creating houses using plastic bottles and recycled materials.
The self-taught architect has already built six houses in the town of Warnes, Santa Cruz and now she is looking forward to put up Argentina’s first bottle house in the town of Roldan. Nearly 36 thousand bottles are tied with concrete and a kind of net to give you a 170 sq meters wall. Before using the bottles, Ingrid fills them with discarded material or sand. When they are ready, a house requires only 15 days to finish. After seeing her efforts to help the needy with building a house that is functional and cheap, the Organization of American States has invited her to travel to Haiti in May to participate in the discussion about the reconstruction of the country ruined by the tremor on January 12.
