It hasn’t been long since Boeing created waves by initiating the construction of its first unmanned, liquid-hydrogen-powered, high altitude long endurance (HALE) demonstrator aircraft. Finally, the world’s leading aerospace company has succeeded in developing the “Phantom Eye”, which was unveiled during a ceremony in St. Louis yesterday. Claimed to be one of the greenest aircrafts of today’s time, this aircraft’s byproduct is just water.
The Phantom Eye is a lightweight green aircraft that will stay aloft for more than four days at altitudes up to 65,000 feet. Capable of carrying a payload of up to 450 pounds, this aerial vehicle has a 150-foot wingspan and can cruise at 150 knots, or 170 miles per hour. Inspired by Boeing’s Condor aircraft, this one here features two 2.3 liter, four-cylinder engines that provide 150 hp each. The Phantom Eye is likely to take its debut flight sometime next year, which will last four to eight hours.
