The Batawa Project, is an effort to bring Batawa, a small town in Ontario, Canada back to life. Keeping to their slogan "beautiful by nature and design," Mrs. J. Bata and students of Carleton University came up with an out-of-the-box idea to create an amazing lighting system. The outdoor lighting is inspired by natural elements and follows five themes: fire, water, earth, wind and sky. All these lighting solutions are not only aesthetically pleasing, but energy efficient and sustainable too.

1. Outdoor Lighting - Earth:

The frame should be metal or strong thick wood and the lights are solar powered. An abstract interpretation of the earth, the light gate has the frame made using either be metal or strong thick wood, while the lights used are solar powered. LED lights can be inserted into the frame, or optical fibers can be woven around the frame and have an LED light source underground. This interestingly designed lighting solution looks as if this powerful form came out from the ground.

2. Outdoor Lighting - Fire:

To add an element of amusement and fun for the children, this outdoor lighting was visualized. It is designed for the children’s playground in town. The main structure in the playground is the Dino-dig (dinosaur bones covered in sand). Giving an ancient feel, the torch-shaped lighting goes along with the dinosaur. These lights get their power from the sun.
3. Outdoor Lighting - Water:

This certainly is a depiction of ingenuity. This lighting solution must be located on the downhill area. Hydro-powered light units are installed in the tracks, and light up as water runs through. The water can be snow-melting water from the snow hills or collected storm water.
4. Outdoor Lighting - Wind:

This innovative work not only adds to the aesthetics, but also to environment. Lights are installed on the wings of the windmills, hence creating a wheel of light. The energy generated from the windmills helps in glowing the lights. The larger windmills are about 10 inches in diameter, while the smaller ones are only 3 inches in diameter and can be planted on the hilltop to create a field of light.

5. Outdoor Lighting – Sky:

Creating a magical fantasy path is the Sky lighting. The beautiful stars in the trees light up your way. The light source is located underground, and light is transferred via optical fibers. One light source is enough to illuminate several trees. As the optical fibers are thin and transparent, so they are almost invisible on the trees, all you can see dazzling are the tips. These lights are even capable of changing colors.
