Bangkok plunges to darkness to spread global warming awareness

After Sydney, Paris, Rome and Athens' going dark to make a 'green' move, to register the countries' concern for rising global warming and its consequences; other countries seem to be cuing in to pick up this strategy to aware the world of the devastating climate change - a change for worse.

Sections of Bangkok, the glittery capital of Thailand went dark for 15 minutes on Wednesday to spread awareness about global warming and its impact on the world. It all happened after 7 pm, when the sun is down the horizon and the world depends on energy consuming, for 15 minutes, the mall storefronts and households across the city housing 10 million people switched off lights and appliances, with the whole city going dark for the period. According to city officials, the campaign is projected to reduce Thailand's greenhouse gas emissions by '4,800 tons'.

Bangkok Gov. Apirak Kosayothin leading the festivities off at one of the city's most luxurious malls, Central World Plaza, said,

This is not only about saving energy for this night. It will raise continued awareness about energy conservation and I would like to encourage people to do it everyday.

To the surprise of some officials who feared panic and looting ahead of the event, the brief blackout was peaceful, though some residents ignore the event's requirement of switching off the lights.

Hope, such events give the habitants a feel of what global warming can bring in, if not controlled at the earliest.
