Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia - the three Baltic States have signed an agreement to build a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania. The Lithuanian, Estonian and Latvian state-owned energy companies each wants to take an equal share in the project, the prime ministers said.

The Soviet-built Ignalina nuclear power plant presently generates more than 70% of Lithuania's electricity, also supplying Estonia and Latvia with power. But the deal allowed Lithuania to join the European Union in 2004, and this led Ignalina to close down.
Leaving the Baltic States reliant on Russian gas for almost all of their power, it is by the end of 2009 the process is scheduled to be completed.
