Antarctica Losing Ice to Oceans -- Rising Sea Levels

Irani SenMar 3 2006

We are already aware that ice sheet is shrinking. But, what is the rate? A new space-based study of Antarctica that can completely measures the ice sheet mass balance shows its ice sheet is shrinking. It was during the period 2002-2005, researchers used satellites to plot changes in the Earth's gravity in the Antarctic.

Researchers conclude that the continent is losing 152 cubic km of ice each year! And this is happening with most loss in the west. This is reported in the journal Science. In recent years scientists have found other evidence too. It is that West Antarctic ice is melting, which could contribute to sea level rise.
