Where an apathetic artisan fails, a willing, enthused artisan takes over and Mike Corvi is definitely one of them. The Southwest Portland was so much inspired with a magazine article on recycling that he transformed an 8-by-20-foot shipping container into an inhabitable space.

After spending about two years to learn the vital building methods and buying a container for $2,900 from a business in Northeast Portland, he availed the services of two skilled laborers to cut out windows and doors, add Jeld-Wen wood window and sliding glass door, and create a front porch with a corrugated metal roof. Later, he asked his brother-in-law Steve Wantland to help him build interior wood frame and attach two inches of rigid foam insulation.
Just to ensure that the interiors look classy, Mike decked the mahogany floor with thick mahogany plywood.
