Green innovators in Africa have installed the Kenya's first rural internet kiosk in the South Coast that runs on solar power. Voices of Africa for Sustainable Development (VOA4SD) being the initiator of various rural youth empowerment programs across the continent, will assist Voices of Diani, a community-based organization to operate the kiosk installed in Ukunda. Where the Internet Society has funded this project through their Community Grants initiative, Intersat Africa comes up to offer the first year of bandwidth at no charges.

Besides allowing the rural youth to access local content, learn Web 2.0 and sharpen their ICT skills at one shilling per minute, a dedicated "duka" portion of the kiosk will inform locals on where to buy products like small solar-powered lanterns and nutritional porridge. Therefore, in a way, the project will go on to create fresh employment opportunities for the rural youth. We hope that, in the near future, we will see more of such kiosks installed elsewhere too.
