$550,000 ICON Solar House seeks affluent clients

After making a mark at last October’s DOE Solar Decathlon, the one-bedroom, 550-square-foot ICON Solar House goes on sale this spring. Since the house relies on solar power for heating, cooling and electricity needs, the University of Minnesota considers it the selling point of the house and is hopeful of fetching anything above the minimum price – $200,000. However, the retail value of the house is $550,000.

Daniel Handeen, research fellow at the Center for Sustainable Building Research, said…

Put this house up anywhere in Minnesota where there is enough sun and you would not have to pay utilities for the rest of the life of the house.

The University plans to move this house, which is currently in parts at a University warehouse, by this summer. Well, the proposals are supposed to pour in after April 12, and a special committee will evaluate them all. According to Handeen, the funds raised from the house’s sale will go to the University Institute of Technology.
