$30 million Plant Accelerator to accelerate researches on plants

International agricultural sustainability and Australia's agriculture and horticulture industries is all set to get a major boost as the Adelaide University will be housing the world’s largest plant research facility. Named as the Plant Accelerator, the high-tech facility in the Waite Campus will flaunt 50 sophisticated glasshouses and labs. You would see the $30 million facility flanked with a kilometer of conveyor systems. When subjected to several remote sensors at the facility, the plants will grow rapidly. The accelerator mode of this facility will come from its ability to more rapidly identify those varieties that will be successful, and therefore reduce the time between the breeding of new varieties and their delivery to agricultural producers.

It's accelerating the research and probably more importantly accelerating the delivery of research advances to farmers. The aim is to try to shorten the time to scientific discoveries and their application.

Says Prof. Mark Tester, director of the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility, as he expresses his optimism. The researchers would consider themselves as better equipped to establish the staying power and adaptability of up to 160,000 plants a year. And consequently, they may succeed in bringing down the breeding time.
