Antarctica’s biggest wind farm, located between the United States’ McMurdo Station and New Zealand’s Scott Base on the Crater Hill, was formally unveiled today. New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully and US Ambassador David Huebner presided over the turn-on ceremony through a video conference that linked them to scientists at the Scott Base. Developed jointly by the two nations, the wind farm includes three wind turbines that are supposed to generate 1 MW of energy to reduce the annual diesel use (half a million liters a year) of their bases. The 39 meters tall wind turbines can tackle the wind gusts of up to 200 kilometers per hour with ease.
