10 truly mesmerizing sand sculptures

Making figures and castles out of sand has always been the best thing to do on the beach. We have attempted to create castles and figures and have mostly failed in getting the details perfected on sand, which is a difficult medium to work with. Here are some amazing sand sculptures that have been sculpted to perfection, in fact making you doubt whether it's sand or not.

1. Neptune’s Sandcastle, Virginia Beach

Neptune's Sandcastle was made in 2006 as an entry for the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival. This amazing sandcastle measured up to 37 feet tall - almost as high as a four storey building. This awesome sand sculpture was built by Team Sandtastic, a team of six brilliant sand sculptors, who used more than 3 million pounds of fine sand to construct the masterpiece.

Boracay Island is located in the island country of Philippines which is known for its perfect sand beaches and blue waters. A lot of tourists from Europe and Australia come to Boracay Island for indulging themselves in a spot of sand art, which also happens to be a favorite pastime on the beach. The Boracay sand castles are very easy to find across the shoreline.

3. Sandsation Sand Sculpture,Berlin

This amazing face sculpture was created during the course of the Sandsation 2010 in Germany, and is made by using two ingredients - water and sand from Niederlehme in Branenburg. This sand sculpture was made by a group of sand sculptors from around the world including the renowned sand sculptor from India - Sudarsan Pattnaik.

The 'Castle to the Sun' is an amazing sand castle that has been built by Ed Jarett as a part of a charity drive for children who are terminally ill and for their families. Located at Point Sebago Resort in Casco, this beautiful castle that looks like one straight out from a fairytale book has been built of of 40 truckloads of white fine sand and 3500 hours of immense hard work by the Jarett and volunteers. With the Castle to the Sun, Jarett is hoping to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records as well!

5. Sandology, Byron Beach

Steve Machell, a resident of Byron Bay is a Sandologist who has been creating sandcastles for the past three years. Machell has participated in various competitions and conventions and his sand castles have become a permanent feature of Byron Bay. You can spot his creations by the beach. Steve's sandy creations take approximately six hours of hard work and three basic ingredients - a bit of imagination, water and lots of sand. Steve's sand castles that are normally finished by sunset look extremely beautiful by the beach when they are illuminated with candles - a perfect treat for those strolling along Byron Bay.

6. Skoda Sand Car on Sydney beach

This sand sculpture of a Skoda car looks like a mirage, just too perfect to be real. Created out of sand, this sandy Skoda Octavia car has been used for an Australian television commercial and has been built by a team of highly skilled sand sculptors to get that perfect life-size shape and genuine look. This amazing creation took more than five days to make on Palm Beach in Sydney by using more than 60 tons of sand.

7. FIFA World cup-inspired sand sculpture at Puri beach in India

This colorful sand sculpture has been made by the world famous sand sculptor Sudarsan Pattnaik from Orissa, India. Built on the golden sands of Puri Beach in Orissa, this sculpture has been inspired by the FIFA World Cup 2010 and shows four faces of popular football players, a football with flags into the background. The sculpture is 7 foot high and is made by using 10 tons of sand. Pattnaik is famous for making sand sculptures with a purpose and has already raised a lot of awareness and charity pertaining to Polio, AIDS and so on.

We normally think of finding sand art on beaches, but the 'Hand of the Desert' is a brilliant sand sculpture that has been made in the middle of the Atacama Desert in Chile, which is also known as the driest desert in the world. Built at a height of 11 meters, this sculpture resembles a massive hand that seems to be coming from beneath the sand. The Hand of the Desert has been sculpted by Mario Irarrázabal from Chile, making it an entirely novel and unique concept.

9. Artists Create World’s Largest Sand Sculpture

This amazing sand sculpture has received the tag of being the tallest sand sculpture in the world by the Guinness World of Records. Created during the Zhoushan Sand Sculpture Festival in China, this 22.43 meter high sand art has been made by the collective effort of 30 brilliant artists in the course of 75 days. The sand sculpture depicts a Nigerian folktale, about how a hummingbird became the king of all the animals.

Sudarshan Pattnaik, the Indian sand artist, is known for his wonderful sand sculptures that often carry a message. With his 100 Santa sculptures on the Puri beach, Pattnaik again tries to send out a message to protect the earth from Global Warming. It took Pattnaik and his team of 20 students, 36 hours of hard work and 1 thousand tonnes of sand to bring forth his creative sand work.
